Well, the warmth of summer is truly behind us, and it’s definitely time to coorie down for these colder, darker months ahead! This provides a brilliant opportunity to make your home feel more inviting than it ever has before!

Creating a cosy home in the colder months is all about layering textures, adding warmth, and setting a relaxing mood. Here are ten simple ways to make your space feel inviting and snug for the season:

  1. Candles – Lighting a few candles is an easy way to add warmth and softness to any room. Opt for seasonal scents like spiced apple or cinnamon to create that comforting autumnal aroma. Candlelight is obviously softer than electric lighting, making the space feel more relaxed and intimate, and throwing whimsical shadows around the room.

  2. Layered Feather-Filled Cushions – Swap out any saggy cushion pads for new feather-filled ones. Not only do they look plumper and more luxurious, but they also feel softer and are perfect for sinking into after a long day. Layering a few in different sizes and textures adds visual depth and comfort. I always pair solid colours with a small scale stripe and a block print, for variety and interest while creating a timeless look.

  3. Faux Sheepskin Throws – Drape a faux sheepskin throw over a favourite armchair. The fluffy texture provides extra warmth and a touch of luxury. It’s ideal for adding softness and is perfect to wrap up in on chilly nights. I can’t guarantee it won’t become your pet’s favourite hang-out spot, though! It’s where you’ll always find our sleep cat, Gatsby!

  4. Soft Rug – A soft, deep-pile rug can instantly make any room feel warmer. Place it in a high-traffic area like the living room or bedroom. It keeps your feet warm and adds another layer of texture that complements a cozy, layered look. You can get washable rugs from Ruggable - but also Dunelm, now!

  5. Mood Lighting with Lamps – Place a few soft-glow lamps around your home to create gentle pools of light. Look for warm-toned bulbs that mimic natural sunlight for a soothing effect that’s easy on the eyes. I love Edison style bulbs for that vintage touch! Try to illuminate every corner of a room, even if this means just wrapping a tall plant in copper wire battery lights in a dark corner with no socket. Or consider a rechargeable light from Pooky or Dunelm.

  6. Heavier Curtains – Swap out lighter curtains for thicker, thermal ones to help insulate against drafts and keep the heat in. Heavy curtains also add visual warmth to your windows, making the room feel snug. Or pair a slightly heavier neutral roman blind with linen curtains in a complementary shade.

  7. Chunky Knit Blankets – Drape a chunky knit blanket over the arm of your sofa or bed. They’re wonderfully cosy and bring a hand-crafted, rustic vibe that’s perfect for autumn and winter.

  8. Baskets of Extra Blankets! – Keep extra blankets in woven baskets around the living area or bedroom. It’s practical and adds to the layered look, inviting everyone to grab a blanket and snuggle up. I also love a wooden blanket ladder - they add softness and texture, help with acoustics in the room, and also look wonderful dressed with a festive wreath & fairy lights.

  9. Fireplace Decor – If you have a fireplace, decorate the mantle with small accents like candles, pinecones, or autumnal foliage. Even an unused fireplace can be dressed up with fairy lights or candles to create warmth.

  10. Warm Toned Artwork – Add art or prints in warm tones, such as earthy landscapes or abstract pieces in reds, browns, and deep greens, to enhance the feeling of warmth throughout your space.
